Daily Writing is Hard, but It's Great for Focus
Why I signed up for a 30 day writing challenge and what I've learned.
Daily Writing is Hard, but It’s Great for Focus
In December, I signed up for an online writing challenge called Ship 30 for 30.
You write a 250ish word essay every day for 30 days. This creates a sustainable habit to improve your writing. It also helps you build community on Twitter. I’m a little over halfway through the challenge and I’ve learned a few key things.
#1: I underestimated how difficult it is to come up with new topics
The first few topics came easily.
I’ve had a few thing I’ve wanted to say for a while, so no problems there. As I approached day 10, it became more and more difficult to develop ideas. Luckily, the course creator, Dickie Bush, has a great framework to support the process.
#2: It has made it much easier to focus my thoughts
In developing my coaching business, I’m looking to work with a certain type of person.
I enjoy working with people who are ready to take on a new challenge in their career. They are very good at what they do and make good money, but they want something more. This writing challenge made me realize that I haven't done a good enough job writing for this individual.
I’m taking on the challenge to change this in 2022.
#3: Not everything is going to win a Pulitzer and that’s okay
Not everything I’ve written has been good.
Some of it feels rushed. But it’s opening up new ideas that will be molded to make a difference in my client’s lives. That makes it worth it.
If you’d like to check out what I’ve written so far, you can view it on my Twitter profile or my Social Blog.
I’m sure I’ll be referencing several of these pieces in the newsletter as time goes by.
